2025 LRFD Fire Season Update
Lookingglass Rural Fire District would like to thank the community for your continued support and for remaining vigilant as we enter what has already proven to be an active and demanding start to fire season.
Even before our summer staffing officially began, LRFD responded to a significant 32-acre hay field fire that spread across multiple properties—a clear reminder of how quickly conditions can escalate during the summer months.
Shortly afterward, our members supported the first-ever Camp Ignition Point, a Young Women’s Fire Camp hosted in Douglas County, where LRFD participated for three full days. Our personnel also proudly took part in the Winston 4th of July Parade and provided coverage during the fireworks event at Riverbend Park. These events were handled while simultaneously responding to emergency calls and launching our summer staffing operations.
For the fourth year in a row, LRFD has received a staffing grant through the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office, which allows us to compensate certified volunteers to staff the station, improving our ability to respond promptly to emergencies.
Historically, our goal has been to maintain two certified volunteers on shift daily. However, due to a limited number of active volunteers and the challenge of ensuring those volunteers have the necessary certifications and experience, we have not been able to consistently meet that target. This season, our current focus is to ensure at least one qualified volunteer is available during weekdays to support the on-duty career staff made possible through the SAFER grant. On weekends, we are working to increase staffing levels where possible—not only to maintain adequate emergency response but also to allow volunteers to engage in much-needed training and obtain certifications that will further strengthen our response capabilities.
Our summer staffing hours are currently set for 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily. These hours have been selected based on seasonal trends and historical data, ensuring we have appropriate coverage during the most active fire periods throughout the day.
As part of our commitment to community risk reduction, LRFD continues to offer the following services at no cost:
- Defensible Space Surveys
- Pre-Incident Surveys
- Reflective Address Markers
To request any of these services or to be added to our scheduling list, please contact us by phone, email, or through our official Facebook page.
We remain committed to protecting and serving the Lookingglass community with professionalism, dedication, and readiness. Thank you for your ongoing support.
