Burn to Learn Training – April 25, 2026

On April 25, 2026, Lookingglass Rural Fire District conducted a comprehensive “Burn to Learn” training at a donated structure located at 5984 Flournoy Valley Road. This live fire training evolution was carried out in full compliance with National Fire Protection Association 1403, ensuring a controlled, coordinated, and safety-focused training environment for all personnel.
The training was planned and executed by John Cota as part of his progression toward obtaining his Live Fire Instructor In Charge certification. He was supported by Bob Scott, who currently holds his Live Fire Instructor In Charge certification and has developed a DPSST-authorized curriculum for the program. This mentorship and structured approach ensured the training met both state and national standards while providing meaningful operational experience.
Personnel from Lookingglass Rural Fire District and Tenmile Rural Fire District worked collaboratively to prepare hose lines, establish water supply, and construct controlled burn sets within the structure. These operations allowed crews to conduct multiple evolutions focused on fire behavior recognition, water application techniques, and coordinated fire attack. Following these training objectives, the structure was allowed to progress to full involvement under supervision.
Live fire training opportunities of this type are limited but critical to maintaining firefighter readiness and operational effectiveness. LRFD extends its sincere appreciation to Darrel Green for donating the structure, which made this valuable training possible. We also thank Steve McGoldrick for documenting the event and helping share the experience with the community.
Lookingglass Rural Fire District remains committed to ongoing training and professional development to ensure we continue providing effective, safe, and reliable service to the Lookingglass community and our mutual aid partners.
