Christmas Safety Tips from the Lookingglass Rural Fire District Volunteers

The holiday season is a wonderful time for our community, but it’s also important to stay vigilant about fire safety. To help keep everyone safe, the Lookingglass Rural Fire District has expanded on key safety tips for the season:

1. Christmas Tree Safety

  • Live Trees: Live trees need daily watering to remain fresh and safe. A dry tree is highly flammable and can catch fire quickly.
  • Placement: Always place your tree at least 3 feet from fireplaces, radiators, candles, and heat vents. This prevents heat from drying it out or causing it to ignite.
  • Artificial Trees: If you use an artificial tree, choose one labeled as "fire-resistant" to minimize risk.

2. Holiday Lighting

  • Inspection: Before decorating, inspect all lights for frayed wires, broken sockets, or loose connections. Damaged lights should be replaced to avoid electrical hazards.
  • Usage Guidelines: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding how many light strands you can safely connect.
  • Timing: Use a timer or make it a habit to turn off holiday lights when leaving the house or going to bed.

3. Candle Safety

  • Safe Placement: Candles should be placed on stable surfaces, away from flammable items like curtains, tablecloths, or greenery.
  • Alternatives: Consider flameless, battery-operated candles to achieve the same warm glow without the risk.
  • Supervision: Never leave a candle burning unattended, especially in homes with pets or children.

4. Kitchen Safety

  • Cooking Vigilance: The kitchen is a busy place during the holidays. Never leave cooking food unattended, and keep flammable items like oven mitts and towels away from the stove.
  • Appliance Maintenance: Regularly check and clean your oven and stove to prevent grease buildup, which can ignite.

5. Fireplaces and Heaters

  • Screen Protection: Use a screen to keep embers from flying out of the fireplace.
  • Decor Placement: Avoid placing stockings, garlands, or other decorations directly above or near heat sources.

6. After the Holidays

  • Tree Disposal: Dry Christmas trees are highly flammable. Remove and dispose of them shortly after the holiday or when the needles start to fall.
  • Storage: Safely store holiday lights and decorations in dry, cool areas to prevent damage that could create hazards next season.
