Community Announcement: Fire Season Preparedness and Debris Burning Guidelines

A firefighter observes a small fire in a forest, smoke rising among the trees.

Dear Lookingglass Residents,
As we approach the 2025 fire season, the Lookingglass Rural Fire District (LRFD) urges all community members to prioritize fire safety and preparedness. The increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires in our region necessitate collective vigilance and proactive measures to protect our homes and environment.
Debris Burning Protocol
If you plan to burn yard debris, please adhere to the following guidelines:
Pre-Burn Notification: Contact LRFD before initiating any debris burn. This allows us to assess conditions and, when possible, dispatch a crew to monitor the burn, ensuring safety and compliance.
Burning Conditions: Only burn during approved times and when weather conditions are favorable. Avoid burning on windy days or during dry spells.
Preparation:
Clear a 10-foot radius around the burn area down to bare soil to prevent fire spread.
Keep burn piles small, ideally no larger than 4x4 feet. Add debris gradually as the fire burns down.
Ensure no overhead obstructions, such as tree branches or power lines, are present.
Safety Measures:
Have a water source (e.g., hose or bucket) and firefighting tools (e.g., shovel, rake) readily available.
Never leave the fire unattended. Monitor it continuously until it is completely extinguished.
Douse the fire thoroughly with water, stir the ashes, and douse again to ensure it is "dead out."
Permits and Regulations: Be aware that during official fire season, burning may require a permit from the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA) or may be prohibited altogether. Always verify current regulations before proceeding.
Fire Season Preparedness
Beyond safe burning practices, consider the following to enhance your property's resilience to wildfires:
Defensible Space: Maintain a defensible space of at least 30 feet around your home by removing flammable vegetation and materials.
Home Maintenance: Regularly clean gutters, roofs, and eaves of leaves and debris. Store firewood and other combustibles away from structures.
Emergency Planning: Develop and practice a family evacuation plan. Stay informed about local fire conditions and alerts.
