Lookingglass Rural Fire District is passing along the following important information from the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA).

Effective at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the Fire Danger Level and Public Use Restriction Level will decrease to HIGH for all private, county, state, and Bureau of Indian Affairs lands within the Douglas District.

DFPA reports that decreased temperatures and improved overnight moisture recovery have allowed for the reduction in restrictions. However, fire season remains in effect, and the public must continue to follow all applicable regulations.

Public Use Restriction Violations

DFPA has responded to multiple Public Use Restriction violations during the past week, including prohibited debris burning.

Violations may result in citations and fines. If an unauthorized fire escapes, causes property damage, or requires firefighting resources, the responsible party may also be held liable for damages and fire suppression costs.

DFPA also reminds the public that violations are tracked statewide and may remain on record for at least five years.

What Changes Under HIGH Fire Danger?

With the Fire Danger Level decreasing to HIGH, several activities that were previously prohibited will once again be allowed during specific hours.

The following activities will be permitted before 10:00 a.m. or after 8:00 p.m.:

• Non-industrial power saw use
• Cutting, grinding, or welding metal
• Cutting, trimming, or mowing dried or cured grass
• Use of power-driven machinery for non-industrial improvement or development on private property

Residents should continue to use extreme caution when conducting any activity capable of producing heat, sparks, or open flame.

Industrial Fire Precaution Level Remains at Level 3

There is no change to the Industrial Fire Precaution Level.

The IFPL will remain at Level 3 districtwide.

Fire Season Is Still in Effect

The reduction from EXTREME to HIGH does not mean that wildfire danger has passed.

Vegetation and fuels throughout Douglas County remain dry, and fires can still start and spread quickly. Lookingglass Rural Fire District encourages everyone to remain vigilant, follow all current restrictions, and take precautions to prevent human-caused wildfires.

Before beginning outdoor work or recreational activities that may generate heat or sparks, residents should verify the current restrictions for their location.

Preventing wildfires protects our communities, property, natural resources, and the firefighters who respond when fires occur.
