Lookingglass Rural Fire District is passing along an important fire-season update from the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA).

Due to increasing temperatures and lowering relative humidity across lands protected by DFPA, the Public Use Restriction Level increased to MODERATE effective at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2026.

The Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) is also at Level 2 within the Douglas Forest Protection District.

These restrictions apply to private, county, state, and Bureau of Indian Affairs lands protected by DFPA within the Douglas District. IFPL Level 2 applies within regulated use areas DG-1, DG-2, UA-1, and UA-2, as well as forestlands within one-eighth mile of those areas, including applicable lands managed by the Roseburg District Bureau of Land Management.

What Does MODERATE Mean for the Public?

Under Moderate Public Use Restrictions, the following activities are only permitted before 1:00 p.m. or after 8:00 p.m.:

• Non-industrial power saw use
• Cutting, grinding, or welding metal
• Cutting, trimming, or mowing dried or cured grass
• Operating power-driven machinery for non-industrial property improvement or development on private lands

Residents planning outdoor work should complete these activities during the permitted hours and remain alert for sparks, hot equipment, or other potential ignition sources.

Vehicle and Off-Road Restrictions

Motor vehicles, including motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles, are only permitted on improved roads that are free of flammable vegetation, except when being used for the cultivation and harvest of agricultural crops.

Each vehicle traveling on forestlands must carry:

• An axe
• A shovel
• One gallon of water or a 2.5-pound or larger fire extinguisher

ATVs must carry a 2.5-pound or larger ABC fire extinguisher.

All other off-road driving is restricted at all times.

Industrial Fire Precaution Level 2

IFPL Level 2 applies to lands protected by DFPA within regulated use areas DG-1, DG-2, UA-1, and UA-2 and forestlands within one-eighth mile of those areas.

Under IFPL Level 2, the following industrial activities may only operate between 8:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.:

• Power saws, except power saws operating at loading sites
• Feller-bunchers with rotary head saws
• Cable yarding
• Blasting
• Welding, cutting, or grinding metal

Fire Season Is Not Over

Although we are moving further into September, residents should not assume that fire season has ended. Increasing temperatures, lower relative humidity, and dry vegetation can still allow a small ignition to develop into a rapidly spreading wildfire.

Lookingglass Rural Fire District asks everyone working, recreating, or traveling outdoors to continue exercising caution. Check current restrictions before beginning outdoor work, maintain required firefighting equipment, and avoid activities that could produce sparks or heat outside permitted hours.
