Drift Smoke Update – August 25, 2025

Forest with smoke and flames indicating a wildfire, surrounded by trees.

Lookingglass Rural Fire District shares the following information from the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA):

What’s Happening

Residents across Douglas County may observe drift smoke today. This smoke is not from local fires within DFPA’s protection area. Instead, it's originating from lightning-caused fires burning in:

  • Umpqua National Forest
  • Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest
  • Willamette National Forest

Earlier today, DFPA confirmed the Coon Creek Fire, a small 0.01 acre lightning-caused fire approximately 13.5 miles northeast of Oakland, OR. It was quickly contained, and the fire is now in patrol status.

To date, there are no ongoing large fires within DFPA’s protection area. The visible haze is drift smoke being carried into our region by winds and cloud cover.
