When a Red Flag Warning is issued, weather and fuel conditions may support rapid wildfire growth and extreme fire behavior. Strong winds can carry burning embers well ahead of the main fire, creating a significant threat to homes and other structures.

Lookingglass Rural Fire District encourages residents to take a few minutes before windy conditions arrive to complete an ember check around their property.

Homeowners should close windows, garage doors, and pet doors; remove leaves, pine needles, and other debris from roofs and gutters; and inspect exterior vents to ensure they are properly screened to help reduce the chance of ember intrusion. Potted plants, patio furniture, firewood, cardboard boxes, trash containers, and other combustible materials should also be moved away from the home.

Special attention should be given to decks, porches, roof valleys, gutters, and other areas where dry vegetation and windblown debris may accumulate.

During wildfire conditions, a structure does not have to be directly exposed to the main fire front to be at risk. Wind-driven embers can travel ahead of a wildfire and ignite receptive fuels around a home, on a roof, beneath a deck, or through an opening in the structure.

Taking these precautions before a wildfire threatens your neighborhood can improve the defensibility of your property and give firefighters a better opportunity to protect structures when conditions allow.

Residents should also remain aware of current fire weather conditions, evacuation notices, and information from local emergency officials.

Prepare early. Stay aware. Do not wait until you see smoke to begin preparing.
