Hazmat Operations Training with Roseburg Fire Department

The Lookingglass Rural Fire District extends its appreciation to the Roseburg Fire Department Hazmat Team for attending our weekly drill on March 19, 2026, and providing a comprehensive refresher on hazardous materials operations for our volunteers.

Hazardous materials incidents are classified as high-risk, low-frequency events. While these calls are not encountered regularly, they require a high level of technical knowledge, coordination, and operational discipline when they do occur. Ongoing training with specialized teams ensures our personnel remain prepared to respond safely, effectively, and in accordance with established standards.

During this training, Roseburg Fire’s Hazmat Team reinforced their primary operational role in mitigation. While the authority having jurisdiction maintains incident command, the Hazmat Team functions as a specialized resource that integrates into the overall response. LRFD personnel also reviewed their supporting responsibilities during these incidents, including assisting with substance identification, establishing control zones, and setting up decontamination corridors.

A key focus of the training emphasized that the level of contamination directly determines the level of decontamination required—an essential concept in protecting both responders and the public.

LRFD values the continued partnership with the Roseburg Fire Department and recognizes the importance of regional collaboration in strengthening overall emergency response capabilities.
