Heat and Fire Safety Advisory – August 10, 2025

The National Weather Service is forecasting extreme heat for the Lookingglass area over the next several days:
- Sunday, August 10: High near 105°F
- Monday, August 11: High near 106°F
- Tuesday, August 12: High near 103°F
- A gradual cooldown is expected beginning Wednesday; however, temperatures will remain warm.
In addition to the high heat, low humidity levels will significantly increase the potential for rapid fire spread. Vegetation in our area is extremely dry, and even a small spark could ignite a wildfire. The public is urged to avoid activities that produce heat or sparks, such as mowing dry grass, welding, or using power equipment during the hottest part of the day.
Understanding Heat-Related Illnesses
Heat Exhaustion
- Symptoms: Dizziness, thirst, heavy sweating, nausea, weakness
- Action: Move to a cooler area, loosen clothing, sip cool water, and seek medical attention if symptoms do not improve.

- Symptoms: Confusion, dizziness, loss of consciousness
- Action: Call 911 immediately, move the person to a cooler location, loosen or remove excess clothing, and cool the body with water or ice.
- Note: Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if not treated immediately.
Safety Precautions During Extreme Heat
- Limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours.
- Drink water frequently—do not wait until you are thirsty.
- Check on elderly neighbors, individuals with medical conditions, and pets.
- Never leave children or animals unattended in a parked vehicle.
- Delay outdoor burning or spark-producing work until weather conditions improve.
Preparedness and prevention are critical during periods of extreme heat and high fire danger. LRFD encourages all residents to stay informed, remain alert, and take steps to protect both personal health and community safety.
