In Memoriam: Chief Michael Merlino

It is with profound sadness that Lookingglass Rural Fire District announces the passing of Chief Michael Merlino — a beloved mentor and true pillar of Douglas County’s emergency services community.
A Respected Career in Service
Chief Merlino served with unwavering dedication throughout Douglas County. His career began with Douglas County Fire District 2, which later merged into Central Douglas Fire & Rescue. He retired from this organization holding the rank of Lieutenant.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Chief Merlino took on the role of Battalion Chief at Sutherlin Fire Department. It was in this capacity that he continued to inspire many with his leadership — even as he faced a personal battle with cancer. After a brief leave to focus on treatment, he returned to service before ultimately stepping down to tend to his health. His resilience in the face of adversity left a deep impression on all who served alongside him. Facebook

During his illness, the community rallied around Chief Merlino in a touching show of support. A drive-through parade was organized in his honor, underscoring how deeply his presence was felt across agencies in Douglas County.
