Live Fire Training Exercise – May 31, 2025

Firefighters in yellow uniforms dig a fire line in a forested area.

The Lookingglass Rural Fire District (LRFD) will be conducting a live fire training exercise on Saturday, May 31, 2025, beginning at 0800 hours and continuing until completion.

Training will take place at the following locations:

2061 Champagne Creek Road (Champagne Creek Ranch LLC)

1213 Colonial Road

This regional training event is designed to provide hands-on, scenario-based fire training to volunteer fire agencies from across Douglas County and throughout the State of Oregon. All departments in Douglas County were invited to participate, and every fire department in Oregon was extended an invitation to take part in this critical opportunity.
The exercise simulates the structure and operations of an Oregon State Fire Marshal Task Force on a Conflagration assignment, with LRFD serving as the fire camp. Participants will train as if they are part of a prepositioned Task Force in response to Red Flag weather conditions and an active lightning storm—a realistic scenario aimed at enhancing regional wildfire readiness and response capabilities.

Red Flag weather conditions are issued by the National Weather Service when high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds combine to create an increased risk of extreme fire behavior and rapid fire spread.

The safety of the Lookingglass community, as well as the safety and quality of the training provided, is of utmost importance when conducting any exercise. All training activities are carefully planned and executed under controlled conditions, adhering strictly to NFPA safety standards and best practices.

Last year’s event had to be canceled due to low attendance, which could have compromised both the safety of the community and the effectiveness of the training. We are proud to resume this valuable training opportunity in 2025 with strong participation and renewed commitment.

During the event, residents may see visible smoke in the area and increased fire apparatus activity traveling between the Lookingglass Fire Station and the training sites throughout the day.

We thank our community for your support and understanding as we work together to strengthen fire service readiness across the region.
