Lookingglass Rural Fire District Scholarship Application Period Reopened

Lookingglass Rural Fire District (LRFD) is proud to announce that the Fire Science Scholarship Application Period has been reopened for an additional 30 days due to a lack of initial applicants. This program provides two full-ride scholarships designed to help individuals pursue higher education in the field of Fire Science while strengthening the future of our volunteer fire service.
Scholarship Overview
LRFD is offering two full scholarships, valued at nearly $16,000 each, to eligible volunteers pursuing a two-year degree in Fire Science. These scholarships are funded to cover:
- Tuition and Fees: $12,969 (based on 99 credits at $131 per credit)
- Additional Lab Fees & Books: Estimated at $3,020 per student
The scholarship aims to empower volunteers who are committed to public service and advancing their knowledge in fire suppression, emergency response, and community safety.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered:
- Be an active volunteer with the Lookingglass Rural Fire District
- Be in good standing with the department
- Demonstrate commitment to both academic and volunteer excellence
Academic Standards
To remain eligible throughout the scholarship period, recipients must:
- Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.4
- Receive no failing grades during the program
- Continue to serve as an active LRFD volunteer in good standing
Tuition Contract
Before enrollment or payment is made, recipients will be required to sign a Tuition Contract outlining the scholarship terms, expectations, and responsibilities. This ensures transparency and accountability throughout the duration of the program.
How to Apply
Applicants are required to submit the following by email to captain@lookingglassfire.org:
- A 500-word essay on the topic:“The Importance of Volunteer Fire Districts in Rural Communities.”
- A cover letter including full contact information (name, phone number, and email).
All submissions should include the subject line “Scholarship Essay.”
Essays will be evaluated on clarity, thoughtfulness, and understanding of the vital role volunteer fire departments play in public safety and rural community development.

- Application Deadline: November 5, 2025
- Interview Week: November 10, 2025
- Final Selection & Notification: November 30, 2025
Applicants selected for interviews will be contacted directly by the LRFD Scholarship Review Committee.
