LRFD Acquires First-Ever Cardiac Monitor Through Community Support

The Lookingglass Rural Fire District (LRFD) is proud to announce the official purchase of our first-ever cardiac monitor, a major advancement in the level of emergency medical care we can provide to the residents and visitors of our district.

Community-Funded, Tax-Conscious Investment

This life-saving equipment was made possible entirely through community and foundation support:

  • Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians — $10,000 donation
  • Ford Family Foundation (Good Neighbor Grant) — $12,500 award

Together, these contributions provided $22,500 in grant funding toward the total project cost of $25,068.86, with LRFD contributing the remaining $2,568.86.

LRFD has consistently heard from our community that residents do not want to see new or higher taxes. We remain committed to honoring that message by continuing to pursue grants, partnerships, and donations to fund critical equipment and training, rather than relying on tax increases.

Cost-Effective and Capable

Initially, LRFD explored purchasing a new ZOLL X Series Advanced Monitor, priced at approximately $47,000 before accessories. To ensure responsible spending, LRFD chose to purchase a refurbished ZOLL X Series Cardiac Monitor—the same brand and model used by Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and Umpqua Valley Ambulance—at a fraction of the cost while maintaining identical functionality, reliability, and warranty coverage.

  • Refurbished ZOLL X Series Cardiac Monitor: $18,765
  • Three-year preventive maintenance warranty: $975
  • Accessories: $4,117.72 (includes multiple blood-pressure cuff sizes, 4- and 12-lead EKG electrodes, printer paper, spare battery and charging station, SPO₂ cables, CO₂ monitoring cannulas, and defibrillator pads for all patient sizes)
  • Training aids: $1,211.14

What the Monitor Enables

The ZOLL X Series is an advanced pre-hospital cardiac monitor and defibrillator designed for both Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) operations.
With this technology, LRFD responders will now be able to:

  • Obtain and transmit real-time 12-lead EKGs immediately upon arrival at a patient’s side, allowing Paramedics to see the patient’s cardiac rhythm and trends the moment they arrive.
  • Perform continuous patient monitoring including heart rate, oxygen saturation (SPO₂), end-tidal carbon dioxide (EtCO₂), and blood pressure throughout treatment and transport.
  • Defibrillate patients in cardiac arrest with industry-standard biphasic energy delivery for safer and more effective shocks.
  • Share interoperable defibrillator pads with regional partners. The ZOLL X Series uses the same defib pad system as Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and Umpqua Valley Ambulance, enabling seamless patient transfers. LRFD crews can send their pads with the patient, and the incoming ambulance will exchange them with unused replacements—saving both critical time and ongoing supply costs.
  • Rapidly return to service after calls by decontaminating the unit, installing new pads, and swapping in a charged battery, keeping LRFD ready for the next emergency.

Training and Implementation

Once the new monitor arrives, LRFD will begin in-service training for all medical responders to ensure proficiency in operation, maintenance, and patient data documentation. Training will include simulated scenarios to familiarize personnel with 12-lead acquisition, monitoring parameters, alarm recognition, and synchronized defibrillation procedures.

Our goal is to have the monitor fully deployed on our first-out apparatus as soon as training is complete, further enhancing the quality of pre-hospital care available to our community.

A Community Partnership in Action

This purchase represents more than just a new piece of equipment—it symbolizes how community partnerships, grant programs, and responsible financial management can directly improve emergency services without increasing local taxes.

LRFD extends our sincere thanks to everyone who provided letters of support, encouragement, and advocacy during the grant process. Your involvement continues to make Lookingglass a safer and stronger community.
