Lookingglass Rural Fire District recently had the opportunity to host the Umpqua Community College Fire Science Program for a comprehensive extrication training evolution at our training grounds.

Five LRFD volunteers are currently enrolled in the UCC Fire Science Program and participated in this hands-on training. We were also pleased to train alongside students affiliated with Glide Rural Fire Protection District, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue Authority, and Sutherlin Fire Department. Multi-agency training of this caliber strengthens regional interoperability, reinforces standardized operational practices, and builds professional relationships that directly enhance emergency response capabilities throughout Douglas County.

The extrication evolutions focused on vehicle stabilization, tool deployment, patient access, and coordinated team operations. In addition to scheduled extrication rotations, students demonstrated exceptional initiative by utilizing downtime to refine fundamental fireground skills including:

  • Proper PPE donning and doffing procedures
  • Hose deployment and management
  • Hydrant operations and water supply establishment
  • Ground ladder placement and carries
  • SCBA proficiency and air management

This level of engagement reflects the professionalism and commitment of the next generation of fire service personnel.

We extend our appreciation to the UCC Fire Science instructors for their continued dedication to delivering high-quality instruction and preparing students for careers in the fire service. Their efforts directly contribute to strengthening the operational readiness of departments across our region.
