Training Together for a safer Community.

On Saturday, September 21, 2024, you may have seen us in action, conducting a crucial multi-department training session. Bringing neighboring fire departments together for training like this is not just about teamwork – it's about preparing for the types of emergencies we may face together.

At the Lookingglass Rural Fire District, we recognize the importance of collaborating with surrounding districts to ensure our firefighters are well-prepared to handle any situation. Not only does joint training help reduce costs, but it also gives us the chance to get to know each other’s equipment, tactics, and personnel. These relationships are critical when we need to work side by side during real emergencies.

Why Training on BLEVE's, LPG, and Natural Gas Fires Matters

During this session, we focused on some of the most dangerous scenarios firefighters can face: BLEVE's (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosions) and LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) and natural gas fires. These incidents are unpredictable and can escalate quickly, making specialized training essential.

  • BLEVE's occur when a vessel containing pressurized liquid is heated, causing the liquid to boil, vaporize, and eventually explode. Firefighters must understand how to prevent and handle these situations to minimize harm to both personnel and the public.
  • LPG and natural gas fires are particularly dangerous because of their highly flammable nature. These fuels are used in many homes and businesses, making it vital for firefighters to know how to safely manage leaks, explosions, and fires involving these substances.

This type of hands-on training ensures our firefighters are equipped with the skills and knowledge to respond effectively to these high-risk incidents.

A Community Effort

None of this would be possible without the support of our community and partners. First and foremost, we want to thank the families of our firefighters. Your support allows us to train hard and respond to calls, keeping our district safe.

We also extend our gratitude to the citizens of our district. Without your backing and trust, our department wouldn't be able to continue its mission of protecting our community.

Special Thanks to Our Partners

This joint training wouldn’t have been possible without the help of many neighboring districts and organizations:

  • DPSST – Thank you for bringing your specialized training props and sending Rick Cooper to support our efforts.
  • Tenmile Rural Fire District – Thank you for lending two instructors and sending five students to the class.
  • Glide Rural Fire Protection District – Thank you for lending an instructor and sending six students.
  • Williams Rural Fire Protection District – Thank you for having a student travel such a long distance to attend.
  • North Douglas County Fire & EMS – Thank you for sending a student to join our training.
  • Kellogg Rural Fire District – Thank you for sending both a student and your PIO to capture footage of this event, create a video, and share it with us.

This training not only improved our technical skills but strengthened the bonds between our districts, preparing us for future responses together.

Thank you to everyone who played a part in this important day of training. Together, we continue to make our communities safer.
